Walsall Fact File
Walsall fors part of the area known as the Black Country and historically was a part of Staffordshire
Probably due to an oversight, it was not listed in the Domesday Book.
Walsall was a small market town by the first part of the thirteenth century, with the weekly market held on Tuesdays from 1220.
Queen Elizabeth I visited the town, when it was known as 'Walshale' and was later visited by Henrietta Maria, the wife of Charles I.
Walsall was heavily involved in industry, including coal mining and metal working. After the coal seams ran dry in the late nineteenth century, Walsall became known for its leather trade. Walsall still manufactures the Queen's handbags, leathergoods for the Prince of Wales and saddles for the Royal family. The town is known as 'The Leather Capital of Britain'.
