Coventry Fact File
Coventry's history stretches back to the eleventh century. Today, Coventry is a city of modern urban planning. This is due to German Luftwaffe bombing in the Second World War, which destroyed much of the city centre. The Cathedral of St. Michael was hit, leaving only the medieval tower and spire standing. The new St Michael's Cathedral was consecrated in 1962
The phrase 'sent to Coventry' is thought to originate from the time of the English Civil War. Coventry sided with the Parliamentarians against Charles I and Royalist prisoners were held in the town
Coventry's early economy relied heavily on cloth manufacturing and leather production. Its prosperity was given a boost by building of the Coventry canal in the 1760's and the introduction of the railway in the 1830's. Industries included metal working, clock and watch making. Coventry became one of the four largest towns outside London. It has been involved with the motor industry and has two universities
Coventry is further from the coast than any other city in Britain and was the world's first 'twin city' when it twinned with the city of Stalingrad in Russia
