Dudley's history goes back to the Anglo-Saxon period. Its name comes from the Old English 'Duddan Leah', which means 'Dudda's clearing'
There has been a castle overlooking the town since the Norman Conquest and it is documented in the Domesday book. The present castle dates to the thirteenth century and was used as a Royalist stronghold in English Civil War and prior to that was visited by Queen Elizabeth I
The earliest building in the town are the ruins of St. James Priory in the Priory Park, which was founded in 1160
During medieval times, Dudley produced agricultural goods and iron products, which were traded throughout the country
During the Industrial Revolution, industries in of the town included coal and limestone mining, engineering, glass cutting, metallurgy, leather and textiles
Dudley has a major shopping centre at Westfield Merry Hill which has played host to a wedding fair
